Is Complete Freedom Possible?
August 3rd, 2009 by Gary Hipworth

It is only possible when living voluntarily on one’s own. This is rare and can be rather lonely.

One cannot be completely free when living in a group because any group, whether family or a business or the State must have a system for making decisions that are binding on all its members.

It is very rare that all members of a group agree to all group decisions.

The history of group decision-making systems is a sequence of struggles by the dominated to gain more freedom in the decision-making process.

Today, in a democracy most people have a lot more freedom than in the past but they could still have even more freedom.

For example Direct Democracy, where people vote on policies directly and eliminate politicians altogether (I hope I live to see that day) they have more freedom than in a Representative Democracy. Electronic communications now makes Direct Democracy a realistic and exciting possibility.

Of course there is inner freedom which is not reliant on external freedom of any kind.

Now that's the freedom worth having!
