“The ultimate meaning for my life is to be found in service to
the unknowable* highest power.”
Question: Am I curious and intent on
discovering who I am at a deep level, beyond my biographical & personal
story?
Answers
: Yes, I do meditation or other forms of self-discovery and awareness and I
understand that not everything in life, and particularly my identity can be reduced to a fixed, known
entity.
No, I know who I am and I get on with my life without getting too
complicated about it.
Question: Do I fear
death?
Answers: Yes, and I confront the idea of death on a daily basis and I have a number of strategies to
manage my death anxiety. No, I am not afraid of death. Never really give it much thought. My faith is a comfort.
Can we talk about something else? No, who or what is going to die?
Question: Do I accept paradox, contradiction, and enjoy the mystery, ironies and
absurdities of life?
Answers:
Yes,
the highest truths are paradoxical. I understand there is a limit
to what humans can know.
No,
I like my reality to be black or white and
simple.
One is either right or
wrong.
*Unknowable means always a mystery, can never be known, as compared to 'unknown' which may be known one day. For example science believes that the universe came into existence with a 'big bang' about 13.7 billion years ago. But what caused this to happen? And if we ever were able to know this answer, what caused the cause of the big bang to be caused? You get to an infinite regress and this is nonsense territory.
